Empowering the Kakwa Community Locally and Globally

Who We Are
The Kakwa Community of Seattle is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the Kakwa people and the broader public—both here in Washington State and across our home countries of Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, and Congo. The Kakwa people come from the Equatorial region of Africa and, due to years of conflict, are now spread across the globe.
Since 1999, our community has worked to preserve our culture, strengthen our bonds, and create opportunities that empower families, youth, and individuals to thrive.
Our Mission
Our mission is to empower the Kakwa community and our neighbors by connecting them with vital resources, meaningful programs, and opportunities for growth. We focus on building strong foundations for the next generation, fostering cultural pride, and encouraging collaboration both locally and abroad.
What We Do
We bring ideas to life through initiatives that create lasting impact, including:
- Educational Programs – after-school and weekend youth activities, tutoring, and leadership development.
- Community Engagement – gardens, cleanups, volunteering, and cultural exchange events.
- Women’s Empowerment – training programs, food handling certification, and support for further education.
- Support Services – housing assistance, bus passes, counseling referrals, and substance recovery support.
- Economic Growth – encouraging entrepreneurship, supporting local businesses, and promoting agriculture back home.
Our Values
At the heart of our work are the five Kakwa pillars of community:
- Belonging – creating safe spaces where everyone feels connected and valued.
- Perspective – honoring diverse voices and experiences.
- Acceptance – respecting and uplifting one another.
- Hope – building resilience through shared vision.
- Humor – celebrating joy and togetherness.
We believe strong communities are built on mutual support, shared values, and collective action. Whether it’s driving kids to sports games, providing shelter in times of need, or celebrating milestones together, we are committed to walking alongside one another.
